19 Ways to Lead Through COVID-19

True leaders lead in every season, not just the good ones. As the world is currently in crisis and the only news is bad news, your leadership is needed now more than ever! Here are 19 attributes of leadership that you can draw from during this time of great trouble.

A leader…

  1. Takes Time for Introspection. Have you been focusing your life’s energy on the things that really matter lately? If not, now is the time for you to pivot.
  2. Declares Their Mission. Do you know what your mission is during this time? For example, my stated mission is “to bring hope to everyone I meet”.
  3. Adjusts Strategy, Then Executes. You may need to adjust your strategy during this time of social distancing, but you still need to be executing one.
  4. Does Not Waste Time. Do not allow what is going on in the world to be an excuse to waste time on self-pity, overindulgence, or an unhealthy amount of worrying.
  5. Maintains Critical Routines. Keep the daily routines intact that are critical to moving you forward, such as the proper amount of sleep, daily exercise, eating right, etc.
  6. Shows Up. Intentionally show up every day for your relationships, in your business, and for those you influence.
  7. Engages People. Reach out to people you know who have withdrawn themselves and become silent during this time. They need to hear from you!
  8. Increases Their Circle of Control. More than ever, focus on increasing your circle of control (the things within your control) and decreasing your circle of concern (the things outside of your control). Check out Increase Your Influence for more detail.
  9. Gives Freely. While some rush to stock up on toilet paper and cleaning supplies, look for opportunities to give to people who are in need.
  10. Encourages Others. Always be on the lookout for an opportunity to offer an encouraging word to someone. It may be the only encouragement they hear these days.
  11. Laughs with Those Who Have Joy. Even in rough times, laughter is always good medicine. Don’t be afraid to express joy with those who are happy.
  12. Cries with Those Who Experience Sorrow. There will be those who experience real loss during this time. Don’t be afraid to acknowledge it and comfort those who are hurting.
  13. Asks the Right Questions. Do not blame others (or the government) for lack of help, but ask what can I do to make things better?
  14. Confronts Evil. There are those (both individuals and political bodies) who will try to take advantage of this crisis for their own gain. Don’t be afraid to confront the evil of their ways.
  15. Defends the Helpless. Be on the lookout for those who are not equipped to face the current crisis, and step in to help them.
  16. Shares Hope. Be a source of hope to those who have no hope of their own.
  17. Shows Gratitude. Always be grateful for what you have, even if it is not necessarily what you think you need.
  18. Keeps A Positive Attitude. Acknowledge what is going on in the world around you, but always stay positive because we know this too shall pass.
  19. Prays. Pray for forgiveness, mercy, and deliverance from the current evil.

Pick a few of these attributes to make your own and be the leader the people around are looking for. It’s time to lead!
